Straight answers. No runaround.
Smoke & Iron Letters is a monthly physical subscription. Once a month, a thick kraft envelope arrives at your door — sealed in burgundy wax, pressed with a crossed cigar and skeleton key. Inside is a handwritten-style letter from Silas Crowe, a set of collectible cards and inserts, a monthly ritual assignment, and a curated playlist.
Season 1 is called The Back Porch Dispatches — twelve monthly dispatches, each built around a theme that matters. Bourbon. Cigars. The open road. Brotherhood. The things that endure.
This is not a product box. It is not a newsletter. It is closer to a standing invitation — once a month, to slow down and read something worth reading.
Silas Crowe is 68 years old. Retired jazz drummer. Ex-Marine — mentioned sparingly, as men like him prefer. Part-time cigar roller. Lifelong bourbon hunter. A widower who writes letters to nephews he's never met.
He doesn't preach. He doesn't give lists of advice. He tells you a story and lets you find what's in it. By the time he's done, something has landed — you just can't point to exactly where.
He is the voice behind every dispatch. Getting that voice right was the first and most important thing we built.
Every dispatch includes:
Silas' letter — 2,000 to 2,400 words, built around that month's theme
The Man Card — monthly ritual name on the front, assignment and curated playlist on the back
Notes Card — fillable prompts to capture your own reflections, kept and re-read in Month 12
Silas' Wisdom Card — 100 to 150 words of personal reflection, meant to be kept
Reference and ritual inserts — 5 to 7 items total, all connected to the month's theme
Everything in the envelope earns its place. Nothing is filler.
The Back Porch Dispatches is the name of Season 1 — twelve monthly dispatches running across twelve months. Each dispatch is built around a specific theme. The full season is designed as a collected work: by Month 12, the complete set tells a larger story than any single dispatch does on its own.
The twelve dispatch themes are revealed monthly — though the first two are known: Dispatch No. 1 is Bourbon Trail Origins and Dispatch No. 2 is The Leaf & The Ritual.
Two options are available:
Annual: $219 prepaid for 12 months. Twelve dispatches, billed once. This is the best value.
Monthly: $27 per month on a 12-month commitment. Billed monthly on your subscription start date.
Both options deliver the same monthly dispatch — the same envelope, the same letter, the same cards and inserts.
First dispatches ship soon after launch. You'll receive a shipping confirmation by email once your first envelope is on its way. From there, one dispatch ships per month, typically within the first week of each dispatch month.
Currently, Smoke & Iron Letters ships within the United States. Shipping is included in your subscription price.

We stand behind every dispatch. If something arrives damaged or an item is missing, contact us within 14 days and we'll replace it at no charge.
If your concern is something else entirely — write to us. We'll give you a straight answer and treat you fairly. That's the only way we know how to operate.
Questions don’t bother me. Silence does.
— Silas Crowe
